SOUTH DAKOTAN'S HEALTHCARE STORY HEARD BY NATION
SENATOR KENNEDY FEATURES SOUTH DAKOTAN'S STORY IN NEWSWEEK ARTICLE
Tim has spoke with many South Dakotans about health care.
Senator Johnson has been calling upon South Dakotans to share their health care stories on his website. More than 250 South Dakotans have submitted stories, which Senator Johnson then shared with the committees of jurisdiction over health care reform. In turn, one of the stories that Senator Johnson forwarded made it to the Chairman of the HELP Committee, Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA). Kennedy found Eden, SD native Mary Dunn's story so compelling, he included it in his recent cover story in the July 27, 2009 issues of Newsweek, entitled "The Cause of My Life." Ms. Dunn wrote to Senator Johnson: "I am a 58 year-old teacher at Roslyn School in northeast SD. Our school is closing in June of 2010, which means that I will be losing my job and my health insurance. I am a Type I diabetic, and I had heart bypass surgery in 2005. My husband is also a teacher at Roslyn, so we will both be losing insurance. I am exploring options and have been told that I cannot stay on our group policy or transfer to another policy after our jobs cease because of my medical condition. What am I to do after 39 years of teaching to acquire adequate health coverage? Thank you for the work you are doing to help me and the many other Americans who are facing health coverage problems."
