HEALTH CARE: REAL STORIES FROM SOUTH DAKOTANS
My husband and I are the proud parents of 6 children. He is a plumber and I am a substitute teacher. We barely are able to make ends meet every month. It is a struggle, and has been since the children were small.
We are SO blessed the children are covered by CHIP insurance. Our 17 year old has OCD, which requires constant medical treatment, but more importantly our 13 year old has epilepsy. She has frequent trips to the neurologist, EEGs, and is on a lot of medication. Her medication costs over $1000 every month, which is covered by CHIP. If we didn't have that coverage, she would be having uncontrolled seizures due to lack of money to pay for the drugs she needs.
Meanwhile, my husband and I remain uncovered. Through his work, they offer a plan, but he would have to pay for coverage for himself, and to add me would be an extreme hardship.
We can't afford any money for frivolous items, and I hate to put health insurance into that category, but for us it is impossible. My husband will need another fusion in his spine soon. We keep putting off doctor visits unless it becomes a life or death emergency. I pray every day for continued health. We haven't been to a dentist for years. I desperately need glasses to see in the distance, but I make do using my son's old glasses when I drive.
I am an important person. I try to make life better for those around me. I love to help other people, and enjoy making people smile. My family depends on me to keep everything flowing smoothly. My health is important to me. I just wish I could get some help with insurance for my husband and myself. I would love for him to be able to get some preventative tests done because he is 52.
Thank you for caring enough to read this. There are SO many people who are in our position. My husband was laid off for 2 months, and hopefully will be able to get back to work by mid-June, so things have been even more difficult. Our 18 year old daughter has enlisted in the Air Force and will leave July 28 for Basic Training. She will then become an Air Traffic Controller. At least I know that she will be covered for all her medical and dental. That is a relieving thought. We continue to pray for your recovery. Thanks!
