Thursday, November 5, 2009

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) today announced his recommendation to President Barack Obama for the federal post of U.S. Marshal based in South Dakota -- Paul Thielen of Rapid City, SD.  Previously, Johnson had recommended Randy Seiler of Fort Pierre, SD to the position.  Seiler, an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the last 14 years, recently withdrew his name from consideration to take a promotion in the U.S. Attorney’s office.

“Thielen is a highly qualified law enforcement professional, who has served our state and the US Marshal Service at numerous levels with distinction.  I make this recommendation to President Obama knowing that he is up to the challenge and will serve our state well,” Johnson said.

Thielen has 20 years of hands-on experience with the US Marshal Service and more than 30 years of city, county, state and federal law enforcement total.  During his 20 years with the US Marshal Service, Thielen has received numerous awards for outstanding performance and more than 25 letters of recommendation.

Thielen, a graduate of the University of South Dakota with a major in Criminal Justice, is currently serving in the Senior Criminal Investigator Deputy US Marshal position in Rapid City for the US Marshals Service, and has worked in that office in a number of capacities has since 1996.  Prior to his time in the Rapid City office, Thielen served in the Tulsa, OK office of the US Marshal, as well as spending several years in the Rapid City Police Department.

U.S. Marshals are appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate for a four-year term of service. The U.S. Marshals Service are the nation’s oldest and most versatile federal law enforcement, having served since 1789, and play a unique role as the enforcement arm of the federal courts.

While it is customary for the President to ask U.S. Senators for recommendations for appointments in their state, it is ultimately the President’s responsibility to nominate a candidate who must then be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
