Johnson Announces $420,725 in Funding to Restore Floodplain in Brookings County

Stimulus funding continuing to move to local communities

Washington, DC - U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) announced today that the United States Department of Agriculture will provide $420,725 to Brookings County in federal funding to restore the Big Sioux River floodplain. The funding is from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

“I am pleased to announce this funding to help restore the Big Sioux River floodplain in Brookings County,” said Johnson.  “This money will not only create and preserve jobs in South Dakota but will also restore our natural resources and increase accessibility to cleaner water to the Brookings community.”

The funding will be used to improve the wildlife habitat, restore 25 acres of wetland and re-establish vegetation hurt by the recent flooding.

Resources from the stimulus package are continuing to help local communities across South Dakota. Funding has already been distributed to local housing commissions, to cities and towns to continue the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, weatherization and local health services. Additional resources from the legislation will continue to be distributed in the weeks and months ahead.

The stimulus package signed by President Obama focused on tax cuts for the middle class, infrastructure investments and job creation. This funding is a prime example of the kind of resources the legislation provides to help improve communities while advancing South Dakota’s economy.
