Washington, DC—U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) today was awarded the Navy’s Distinguished Public Service Award for his work as Chairman of the Military Construction and Veteran’s Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee. The award, granted by the Secretary of the Navy, is the highest honor given for public service by the Department of the Navy.

“I am honored to receive this award from the Department of the Navy, and will continue to provide for our men and women in uniform. Under my Chairmanship, the Military Construction/VA Appropriations Subcommittee has given our veterans and military infrastructure historic levels of funding as we confront two wars and additional conflicts abroad. Although we have made great progress, I am committed to continuing to provide for our servicemembers in the years ahead,” said Johnson.

Donald Winter, the Secretary of the Navy under President George W. Bush, granted Johnson the honor in recognition of his work as the Chairman of the Military Construction/VA Appropriations Subcommittee.  Johnson was presented with the award by Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Gary Roughead, today in his Washington office.

According to the Department of the Navy, nominations for the honor are “limited to those extraordinary cases where individuals have demonstrated exceptionally outstanding service of substantial and long term benefit to the Navy, Marine Corps, or as Department of the Navy as a whole.”

Below is the inscription included on the award given to Johnson:

For exceptionally distinguished service to the Department of the Navy as a member of Congress and the Senate Appropriations Committee from January 2006 to January 2009.  Senator Johnson’s selfless devotion to the Nation’s Sailors and Marines ensured they were provided the resources necessary to effectively conduct the Global War on Terrorism. His courageous leadership, vision, and loyalty to the men and women of the Department of the Navy greatly contributed to their quality of life and helped create the most modern and highly trained fighting force in history. As a member of the Subcommittee of Military Construction, Veteran’s Affairs and Related Agencies of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Johnson’s tireless advocacy helped maintain the Navy and Marine Corps team at the highest levels of combat readiness to meet the challenges of the 21st century. With grateful appreciation for his outstanding contributions to the Nation and Marine Corps, Senator Johnson is awarded the Department of the Navy Distinguished Public Service Award.
