Washington, DC –U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) has selected McPherson County as his May 2009 "County of the Month." The county is highlighted in a special section of his website at http://johnson.senate.gov.
"McPherson County has a rich cultural heritage and plenty of enjoyable recreational sites,” Johnson said. "I am proud to have helped the county on projects from funding blackbird crop damage research to funds for improving juvenile justice."
McPherson is home to the communities of Eureka, Leola, Long Lake, Wetonka and Hillsview, among others. The county is also home to the Eureka Pioneer Museum, Schmeckfest in Eureka, Leola Rhubarb Days, and some of the best hunting in the state.
Johnson is a strong advocate of homeland security and economic development grant programs that help our small communities continue to grow. He was also proud to secure federal funding for programs in McPherson County to establish blackbird crop damage, and establish a coordinated juvenile arrest tracking system for the Fifth Judicial Circuit of South Dakota.
"I wanted to highlight one specific county each month to recognize our communities,” Johnson said. "South Dakota communities deserve credit for their accomplishments -- they are truly great places."
