Washington, DC - U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) is pleased to announce today that the United States Department of Agriculture will provide $1,157,670 in federal funding to restore floodplains along the James River in Sanborn County. The funding is from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
“I am pleased to announce this funding to help restore the James River floodplains in Sanborn County,” said Johnson. “This money will not only create and preserve jobs in South Dakota but will also preserve our natural resources and provide clean drinking water to rural cities and towns.”
The $1.1 million will be used to restore two floodplains along the James River. $819,395 will be used to restore 422 acres of floodplain, while $338,275 will be used to restore an additional 179 acres of floodplain. The funding will improve the wildlife habitat in the area, create as many as 20 jobs and improve water quality for residents of Sanborn County.
Resources from the stimulus package are continuing to help local communities across South Dakota. Funding has already been distributed to local housing commissions, to cities and towns to continue the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, weatherization and local health services. Additional resources from the legislation will continue to be distributed in the weeks and months ahead.
The stimulus package signed by President Obama focused on tax cuts for the middle class, infrastructure investments and job creation. This funding is a prime example of the kind of resources the legislation provides to help improve communities while advancing South Dakota’s economy.
