Johnson Announces $4.1 Million for Rosebud Sioux Tribe to Construct New Airport

Washington, DC - U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) is pleased to announce today that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 will provide the Rosebud Sioux Tribe with $4.1 million in federal funding to construct a new airport. The facility will help improve travel and economic conditions in Indian Country.

“This stimulus funding for the Rosebud Sioux tribe to construct a new airport is a significant step forward not only for the tribe, but for communities across Indian Country,” said Johnson.  “This stimulus bill is having a real impact across our reservations, and helping make necessary improvements to housing, schools, and roads.”

Resources from the stimulus package are continuing to help local communities across Indian Country. Johnson has already announced that funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment for construction projects to improve conditions for tribes across the state.

Last month, Johnson also announced more than $100 million for reservations across the state for road maintenance, school construction and repairs at detention centers. Funding has also already been distributed to cities and towns to continue the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program.

The stimulus package signed by President Obama focused on tax cuts for the middle class, infrastructure investments and job creation. This funding is a prime example of the kind of resources the legislation provides to help improve communities while advancing South Dakota’s economy.
